Fan-tailed Cuckoo

This bird landed so close to me that all of the photos I took bar one were too close to fit in the frame and I wasn't game to move without it flying off.

I know the feeling, I had a tiny Thornbill land on my arm the other day, I was too frightened to breath. I got one photo, although blurry, I will not forget what happened. (I know, the bird made a mistake)

I like your photo, one bird I only have a bad photo of, I can hear them in the bush behind us, but can't get close enough to them.

a lovely bird - shame about their egg-laying habits

You were lucky to even manage a photo at all M-L by the sound of it.

Peter they have a reputation but they do look striking.

I'm encouraged to hear that fan-tailed cuckoos are at your place, Araminta. We had regular visits from a fan-tailed cuckoo (probably not the same one each year) & a pallid cuckoo (ditto) for about 3 or 4 years. Then our revegetation galloped skywards & I've only seen one pallid cuckoo in about the last 20 years. There must be a reason other than plenty of trees & shrubs for their demise in my area.

I like the pic, well done.  Nothing like that around my place.
