There's a strong argument for fishing gear to be tagged so that ownership can be determined &, in cases like vandalism to this pelican, prosecutions prosecuted. Perhaps there should also be deposits made on fishing gear so that refunds can be made to collectors at local fishing gear recycling depots.
The biggest killer of birds at sea and along beaches are " bottle tops", there has been some research done on dead birds. After they looked at the stomach content they found most had swallowed bottle tops. And those not only come from people on boats, they come from people in the cities carelessly throwing them in the gutter. Then they end up with millions of poisonous cigarette butts washed into the sea via stormwater drains. If we cared about birds, we should start a campaign to make more people aware about that.
Thanks. That's actually a big problem. Before I liked fishing at Goolwa and once I caught carp, but a pelican saw it when I manipulated by rod and swallowed fish breaking gear. Now I've just photographing. And I have some experience how to free pelican of gear.

Sorry russianbear, great photo. I don't know anything about fishing, of the piece hanging out, is there another end the bird has swallowed?

Speaking of butts, I'm amazed that smokers still throw them on the ground without the slightest thought. It's very saddening.
Good photo; this should be in newspapers everywhere.
