Fishing for Birds

Over the weekend I took my boys out in my tinnie fishing (for fish) but also took my camera along with me (to hopfully fish for Birds as well) cheeky

After a while of only getting nibbles and my eldest getting a small Bream I saw a Brahminy Kite circling fairly high up.

I had a mullet I filleted one side off to use for bait, so I waived it in the air and then threw it in the water to see what would happen and had the camera ready.

It immediately circled a lot lower, in fact I had to go to 400mm on my Tamron 150-600mm. I thought here we go and was getting ready for it to dive in and take the fish. Then out of nowhere a bloody Pelican came in and took it. The Brahminy hung around a bit longer to see if I had anything else to throw but I had nothing left so he flew off.

After chasing the Pelican off with my boat (much to the kids delight) we went to one last spot before calling it a day. We were fishing there for about 15 mins and enjoying listening to the birdlife in the nearby bushland when I looked up and saw the Brahminy Kite in a tree overhaning the water just above me. Unfortunately it had a stick running right through the middle of the photo but other than that I was happy with the shot.

Kids had a ball, I got some photos, I also caught a much small but still a fish so as not to let my eldest outfish me so all in all a good afternoon.

What have you got there

Enjoyed "Tales from the Tinnie"!
Agree with the others, you have some fantastic photos there of pelican and the kite.
(Pelicans are not always the thieves - I remember seeing some photos on here of a sea eagle bullying a pelican and grabbing the fish out of its bill)

Thanks Elsie, Tim, WD, Rick, Reflex, Vas and HB for your lovely comments.

It was one of those rare moments where it was a win, win, win all round.

A win for the boys going fishing with their dad, a win for me having father son time (especially since they can now bait their own hooks and cast out their own lines cheeky) and a win with photography.

Oh and lets not forget to mention a win for the pelican who got a free feed!

Cheers
