Spectacular shots Shorty!  Love the glare of the smaller bird in that third shot - phew, must be a fair little bully to cower a Kite laugh.

I've always wondered....what is the trade-off between a BoP & the black & white's that seem to always shadow & annoy them?  I mean, the black & whites (presumably) are there for the scraps and left-overs, aren't they?  What's in it for the big birdies - why don't they just turn around and eat the black & white that's being pesky?

Thanks, Ruby and Grohlster.

My observations at the wetlands this year.

The BS Kites and N Kestrel don't get harrassed by the black and whites.

They also get on with each other.

The BS Kite does attack any other Raptor that comes around.

Whistling kites get harrassed by the black and whites and the water birds get a little nervous.

Swamp harrier gets harrassed by the black and whites and the water birds get very nervous.

But on the weekend i watched the Swamp Harrier chasing a Raven?

About once a month i see a WB Sea Eagle fly over, he is to high for the black and whites to get to him but the water birds are in extreme panic. The ducks take to the air and the coots and hens etc hide in the reeds.

So to answer your question, i have no idealaugh

Rawshorty, you're in Canberra?
Is this the Jerrabomberra Wetlands?
I drove down to Canberra for a gig Saturday night and went to the wetlands first. Awesome spot, so many hides!!

Wow! How lucky are you! I plan to head back there again soon, it was great! I'll put up my pics from it soon. There wasn't much action, and a pair of people came along to the waters edge (instead of using a hide), and off went all the birds. Grr!

Awww Shortyyy!  I was hoping you'd have an answer too laugh.  Love your other Obs though, it's a complicated pecking order in the bird world for sure!

Isn't that just so ANNOYING Jess!!  I've had times when I've been patiently waiting for ages for a certain bird to decide to come out.  Not another person in sight - then, just as I hear a rustling and start thinking yayyy, had someone run up to me with their barking (but very cute) dogs and ask, WHAT DO YOU SEE!!  My answer, politely with smile (through almost clenched teeth though I will admit blush) - "Well, nothing at all now".  Lol.

Too true Shorty!  The day I stop learning is the day I stop breathing, I always say too smiley  How close were you to that Brown Snake?  Or just a good long lens?

A few metres away and a long lens, after we took some pics he moved on but then another one came out of the grass near our feet so we had to quickly jump back, then after he left we turned around to see one was behind ussurpriseat this point we thought it would be a good idea to go back to the hideenlightened

Oh my goodness! What a beautiful but scary snake! And the amount you were surrounded by!!
5 hides! Wow! I didn't have much time to explore, I'd only driven from Sydney with a few hours to spare.
I don't think these people were birders, as I said, they weren't very discreet... lol.
