Magpie Musings

Hi everyone

Just want to share my story.

For the past year or so I have developed a relationship with a pair of Magpies - Marge & Homer Beaky. Homer was/is a beautiful big strong male, Marge has a slight beak fault -the upper tip is missing - hence the name Beaky, and she's also a bit skittish and gets this look that reminds me of Marge Simpson,so that's where the names came from, most often they were together - a devoted couple. Both of them would take food from my hands, introduced their babies to me,and sing to me & I would talk to them, & life was good until........... the tree removal incident (see my post "so upset"). I thought that the magpies were unscathed by it but I fear now that, that was not the case.

Homer has gone...I haven't seen him the tree episode, maybe it's just coincidence, I don't know. Marge has been calling for him, every day.... my heart breaks for her...her mournful cry echoes through the quiet.

But word must have got around, because there is now a new male on the scene, and a fine looking one he is too, I'm hazarding a guess that he is a reasonably young bird based on his size. Marge seems very accepting of him & him of her, they have been visiting me together over the weekend...I guess life, really does go on.

I haven't decided on a name for him yet? Any suggestions?

Thanks for listening

Hello,
What a beautiful story.
I, too used to have a friend maggie with the top part of its beak missing. It was interesting to watch it contort its head right upside down in order to pick up feed from the ground. It is a hard ask to follow the name "Homer" when Marge is concerned! Needs a bit more thought. Will he inherit the added 'Beaky' too? Toy Boy Beaky?
Keep us posted.
