These were taken at Mornington on Gibb river road, on our last day when we were leaving we sat beside a river crossing the road at sun up and these gouldians came into drink. For a short while there were birds everywhere, I just concentrated on the gouldians but in the photos there are friar birds, wood swallows, banded honeyeaters, pictorellas, chestnut mannikins, double barred finches and bar brested honeyeaters. It was just an explosion of birds for about ten minutes.
The Black face and Red face varieties. Thanks for the effort you put in to cater to our voyeurism of a beautiful bird. You must have been happy to find them.
Regards
Shane
Would love to see these, thanks for sharing.
Beautiful - you must be very happy with the sighting and the photos. Very nice to get both the red- and black-faced birds. They are the jewels of the dry country.

Wow, Beautiful birds thanks for sharing as I will never see these birds. Thanks
Matt
Thanks for posting these great photos. How lucky you were to witness the masses descending! I bet you couldn't take photos fast enough! Beautiful shots. Have you seen many Gouldians around? I only managed to find 2 in the distance when I was in the Top End last year, despite the abundance of many other spp of finch... Hopefully they'll make a comeback...
Cheers,
Scott.
Those are wonderful mate. Seeing these would be amazing.
Cheers, Owen.
Thanks for the comments, it was a struggle, we spent six days looking for these birds and had a very fleeting sighting on the second day then nothing until the evening of the sixth day but it was too dark for photos, as we left early the next morning it was our last chance and they turned up, what a relief. Even though I would have loved to have got them in a bit better surrounds you just have to take what you can get. Two years ago I spent five days there and didnt see one so I'm still very happy. Plus because I would have prefered to have better sourroundings it gives me a good reason to go back for unfinished business.
Headsie - just not good enough as you didn't get the Golden-headed morph - you have to go back
seriously though, thank you very much for these pics
