Went to the local Park today, this is what I saw: the Grebe was swimming in the middle of the lake, when I noticed it kept looking towards the sky. I thought, there has to be something up there. As I was thinking it, the Grebe dived down under the water, and didn’t come up for a long time. When I looked up, there was a Wedge-tailed Eagle. Good move.
Nice pose and detail. I just noticed that the Grebes are back at my local dam as well, but it's in private property so no pics.
Cheers, Owen.
I remember ChrisF asking herself the same question when the Grebe on her dam had tiny young and didn't hide when there were BOP in the air. I think she lost some of the young . I suppose the little ones have to learn how to dive quickly, just like mum.

You're right M-L (Great photo BTW)
We still have one baby, which is almost as big as mum now.
Mostly they are sticking to the edge of the dam, which has lots of small trees and long grasses to hide under.
There are also lots of water lillies and other floating weeds etc for them to hide around and under.
Mostly to find them these days I have to listen for the young one calling out to mum, then keep looking until I find ripples which usually show me where mum has just dived under.
The youngster does dive now, stays under for a little while - mum was frantic yesterday because she didn't see where bubs came up. It had surfaced about two metres away from her on the other side of the water lilly patch
