Hmmm Roger, I couldn't find anything in my books, it only tells me about the juveniles, but I know what they look like , because I had lots of those this year.
(or are you pulling my leg, and I should be looking for the "high heals they are wearing next? I know a few boys who wear those, and I don't mind one bit. That is if they are cute)
Back to the serious female Grey Fantail, (not that the other topic wasn't), I'm still interested in the difference between the sexes. (stop it M-L, I'm digging a hole for myself here)
I guess immature birds of many species are hard to pick, I can't figure them out. I am going to upload a mix of "Grey" fantails, with differing amounts of grey and brown. Maybe someone can comment on them and let's know a bit more about them.
(We might have to wait for them to upload, I can't see any recent pictures in the 'slideshow' window).
Are we going to get to the bottom of this now? A few weeks ago I asked the same question, because I thought the grey/brown question would get answered, but back then nobody .was interested. I wanted to find out, if there was a regional difference. But then I posted a few Grey Fantails from my garden. That disproved that idea. I have Fantails from light brown to darker brown, from light grey to almost black/grey, and every colour in between. I then stopped investigating, I now know, they come in many variations, even in my garden. Most books will tell you that juveniles are brown, I have shown in some photos I posted, not so, I have had some very grey young this year.
This is a note for the website guys and gals (in case it's of any use) I just had a look at some pages where images aren't appearing as people would expect and it looks like the page is calling for the images from the folders,
but the files have not arrived there during or after the upload process. Seeing as they turn up later on, I guess the process is taking place but very slowly. Is the server that process the uploaded images under some sort of stress?
I think there are quite a few fairly subtle variations in grey fantail colours. I've noticed their fronts can vary from almost white through cream to pale apricot. As for the grey-brown variations, I suspect this has more to do with the phase of their development from juveniles to adults.
I found my first Grey Fantail today... at least I think it was grey. I took many shots but they're blurred. I'm going back tomorrow to try again. It was at the Fremantle Cemetery which is well stock with wildlife.
Another lovely shot M-L. They are very quick, well done catching the full spread tail
He's gorgeous. Well caught.

How can you tell it is a boy? ( I know a few boy princesses though) HaHa, don't tell me, by looking at the tail?

I think you maybe can tell by the brown eyebrows?

You are a crackup! Yep, probably juvenile, but I wish I knew for sure. We have discussed this previously. http://birdsinbackyards.net/comment/62157#comment-62157
