Gull at Manly

We haven't seen a gull like this before with the dark eye, black legs and wing-tips. Any ideas? I thought that Franklin's gull looked possible, but I really don't know.

Hi Meave, I don't know much about Gulls but my first impressions is that this birds wings are more Tern like?

Is breeding plumage or juvenile a possibility? Someone who is experienced with ocean and shore birds is sure helpwink

Cheers, Jackie

Thanks jfiess78, I just came back to the forum after I also had a brain-wave - maybe a gull-billed tern? Don't know why I didn't consider it being a tern before. I think you are right, thanks.

I think it looks like a non-breeding one  - like the pic in the Sim[pson and Day book and also the Morcombe book - thanks for your suggestions, don't know why I got fixed on the gull at first, should have turned a couple of pages shouldn't I?

We've had a few computer problems and I haven't been on the forum for ages - quite apart from being away a few times. It's nice to be back on and have helpful people at hand to make suggestions when I get stuck.

Thanks again Jackie

a confirmation of non-breeding Gull-billed Tern

I got pics of breeding and npn-breeding G-b Ts at Deception Bay (on the northern side of Moreton Bay, whereas Manly is on the southern side) a fortnight ago

Thanks Peter. Nice to know for sure, saves me puzzling over it.
