Hornet riding a White-plumed Honeyeater

Was taking photos of a White-plumed Honeyeater feeding in some wet gravel/sand when a hornet appeared and sat on the Honeyeaters back. Unusual to see the honeyeater with the bees, but even more so the hornet!

first of all,thats a hornet,and second,if that bird got stung,it would probably die.scary thought.

but good shots anyway :p

Have enough trouble with the birds most of the time, so to go into insects is a whole other life, so more than happy to be corrected, and no, happy to report the honeyeater wasn't stung

I've succumbed to the birding bug!

It would be interesting to know what it was that had all the bees and honeyeaters eating down on the ground, as that's not normally their style.

Was it under a tree or anything? I'm guessing that either it's possibly nectar/pollen falling from a tree. Another possibility, that I've seen before in the bush, is that insects such as psyllids produce sticky secretions that drip from trees (particularly eucalypts).

That really is unusual. I guess they're used to bees  - they probably meet them all the time in flowers
