My sister took this photo today. It was her first time photographing birds and she thought she was taking a pic of a Grey Fantail (she did photograph some Fantails in the same tree) but when I checked it on the computer it's not a Fantail. It's about that size but has no white markings on it's face and has white bands on it's tail. I can't figure out what it is. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I would say it is a fan tailed or a pallid cuckoo. Did it have any colour on the breast?
That one is a Fan-tailed Cuckoo because of the barring one the tail.
Nice one. :)
At this time of year you expect to see cuckoos around, looking for a nest to lay into. Often you notice them because they are being mobbed by little birds who know what they are up to.
This is all we saw of the bird so I don't know if it had colour on the breast. Looking at my field guide I'd say Fan-tailed Cuckoo is right. The size and distribution fit. Thanks berldo and QLDbird, you were both very helpful:)
She also managed to get a photo of a Striated Thornbill which I haven't got yet. Beginners luck I guess...
Thanks GregL. There were alot of little birds in the same tree being very vocal so maybe that's what it was up to.
