I would hazard a guess as a Sacred KIngfisher and a Figbird Oaks. It is a bit hard to see the Kingy and his colours clearly. It may be some other kind given that you are in Mackay but I think that is what they are!
Doesn't have the general shape and impression of and Indian Myna Owen. I grew up with them in NZ (they are everywhere) and am familiar with them unfortunately.. Juv figbirds have a varying colour on their eye mask and they become the dark red as they grow older.
AS it is in Mackay I don't know what the population of Indian Mynas is like anyway.... maybe Tassie can confirm?
Hey Owen, didn't mean to sound harsh or anything :')
NZ.... yes a great place to grow up and a great place to leave too. IMO of course!. I took my daughter back their to start her school days there as it is a lovely place for young kids. We lived in a country area so lots of farms and all the cute white fluffy lamb stuff LOL
I missed the wild life that I had grown accustomed to in Australia and in particular I found it lacking in bird life around where I lived I moved to Perth when I was 21 so most of my life has been spent in Oz. The first 6 months i spent at the top of the Kimberleys and THAT WAS AN EXPERIENCE!
I know it's a honeyeater of somekind. I'm trying to modify the pic so it will fit the head. The head shape is honeyeater. Plus the body was pretty green like the other honeyeaters. All the friarbirds I've seen are brown and grey. I'm certainly not an expert, but the entire bird says honeyeater to me. The white around the eay is what got me. It's white not grey and not blue.
I was 75% it was a sacred kingfisher too. It's the first kingfisher I've seen over here. The kingfishers in the US are much bigger.
Birdie is spot on with her first post thats exactly what they are, a Sacred and a Figbird.
Your Figbird is a non breeding male, hence the faded red around the eye.
Owen, there are no Indian Myna's in Mackay at all, they are to the Nth in Townsville and to the Sth at Port Alma, I have never seen any anywhere else in between those two area's mate.
Oaks if your interested I can let you know when the bird club goes out again in Mackay and you can come along if you want.
We have some top spots we go to including some superb wetlands on private properties, we go out once a month, usually the 2nd Sunday of every month.
Yes I am hearing you mate, I bought a pair not to long ago in Singleton NSW.
Oaks I would try the gun shop, I believe he has just moved out to the Industrial estate at paget....I bought a pair of Tasco's and have found them to be alright, tasco make a fairly nice rifle scope to.
Sorry

To add to Birdie's id (with which I agree) - Forest Kingfishers are more blue and white, as opposed to the Sacreds, which are more green and buff.
are you sure it's a figbird not an indian myna. figbirds have red skin around their eyes and mynas have yellow.
Cheers, Owen.

Hopefully this will just show the head, it keeps getting cut off.
There finally I got it's head on there. Could it be a juvenile of some sort?
SOrry Oaks, I should have said I had already viewed the full sized pic and I still think it is a Figbird.

Thanks for the confirmation Tassie, and Oaks17 .... we said it is an Australasian Figbird and not a Friarbird . They are quite different :)
