Hello everyone. Today as I was walking I heard a parrot-like chirping call coming form a she-oak tree nearby. I went to look at the tree and perching on it was a small brownish/grey bird. What struck me was unlike most birds it's size it was perching upright. The call was also very strong for a bird it's size. From memory, the bird had a small straight dark beak.
Any ideas?
P.S a question about horsfield bronze cuckoos, where would they be at this time of year? A believe I might have seen one but I am not sure if they would be around in sydney at this time.

Hi Coee. Bronze Cuckoos can overwinter even as far south as Melbourne and yours sounds like either a Horsfield's or shining Bronze Cuckoo.
Cheers, Owen.
Hi owen. I believe I saw a single immature horsfild's bronze cuckoo today at western Sydney regional park. Do they bread at this time because if not then I can scrap that theory. The bird that I think I saw sitting on the tree is possibly a jackie winter.
The cuckoos don't breed at this time of year but I don't know wether they still make calls. I have seen a Jacky Winter but I didn't hear it so I wouldn't know what is sounds like.
Cheers, Owen.
I guess it wasn't a horsfields bronze cuckoo...
Hello. I have been trying to identify a smallish bird that crashed into our glass windows/doors and died. it is a beautiful little bird and from the Field Guide to Birds of Australia I think it is a horsfields bronze cuckoo or a little bronze cuckoo. It has a greenish/bronze sheen on the wings and outer tail, a slightly curved beak and has very distinctive bars/stripes going across on the chest and inside tail. Is there any way I can identify this poor little bird on the Birds in Backyards site? I have tried the bird finder but it has been no help!
Hi Helena
Can you take a photo? If so, either post a photo here or send it to me: birdsinbackyards@birdlife.org.au and I can either ID it directly or post it up here for you.
Cheers
Holly
It would be either horsfield's or shining. I have had Horsfield's run into windows a couple of times, so that is probably what it is.
Thanks for your interest and response Holly. Here are 4 photos of a sadly poor dead little bird. My husband saw it hit the window and said it was being chased by another bird.
