Hi Kathiemt,
What a great shot, you sure you didnt glue its feet to the tree. The little buggers flit around so fast. Im pretty sure it is a female superb fairy wren. Thanks for sharing.
As you say, they flit around so fast - wouldn't have had time for the glue to set :-) I was just lucky - in the right place at the right time and for a change, actually was noticing things!
Nice pics.I was digging a new garden bed today and a group of about 8 wrens came round checking over the freshly dug earth for worms. Nice for a bit of company, lovely birds.
Hi kathiemt
Great shots :)
i think you will find that it is a immature male superb fairy wren - because of the blue tail - female wrens have a red-brown eye ring and a brown tail
my book says "immature - like female with pale brown tail; young males acquire blackish bill and blue tail before first winter, coloured plumage during first breeding season"
it seems to have a blackish bill and of course a wonderful blue tail
hope this helps and hope i'm right lol :)
Yes you have a Superb Fairy-wren there. He is a mature male (though still quite young) who has gone into non-breeding plumage. As they get older and have more testosterone, males retain their breeding plumage year round.
I manage to get about 4 shots before they took off. There was definitely one that had the striking blue but I could only see bits of it through the bush so didn't get that one.
