Hello, sorry it all happened so quickly, I did not have time to grab the camera. I think I saw a White-winged Chough
in our outdoor back area (we don't really have yard, just a back terrace)and it landed in the neighbour's tree which overhangs our fence. It had very red eyes and when it took off there were lighter feathers underneath. I looked at the photos of the White-winged Chough on this site and I think it was one of these, except it appeared to have more red on its beak and its feet/claws looked more like a BOP's. Is it possible that it was a White-winged Chough in this area (Naremburn, North Shore, Sydney, NSW) or could it have been another bird which looks like one?
thanks

White-winged Chough in Naremburn
Yeah it is, I also responded in the intro section, and the area of distribution of it shows it should be in your area!
Thank you for that. I hope it comes back. I found its eyes very amazing...
I don't think you would be likely to see a white=winged chough in the suburbs of Sydney though I suppose it is possible. They are about the size of currawongs and make a whistling or rasping noise. They live in family groups and feed in leaf litter. Perhaps it was a dollarbird or something like that.
Yeas, it is an unusual place to spot what could be a chough, but a dollarbird doesn't have striking red eyes does it?
Problem solved, me thinks. While I was looking at the dollarbird, I stumbled across what it was. I am pretty sure it was a male Common Koel. Do you all think? The picture is pretty spot on.
I have often heard the Koel call, but this is the first time I have seen one.
Good one afterbanns, it never occured to me :) A koel seems a much more likely answer.
Lots of White-winged Choughs in the Castlereagh area. :)
