my daughter and I were watching the birds in the yard today and saw quite clearly a parrot neither of us could identify or find in our field guide or on the bridfinder.
this parrot seemed to be a rosella of sorts and there were both eastern and crimson rosellas in our yard along with rainbow lorikeets. it was not the same as any of these birds and did not associate with any of these birds. it was not a king parrot.
to set the scene: we live north of Penrith NSW not far from the nepean river (about 2kms.) We have a lot of gum trees in flower in our yard and the neighbouring yards. Today seemed to be 'parrot day' in our yard this morning.
this bird was mostly a vivid green with a bright red under its beak and on the top of its head. it also had tinges of blue and yellow on its wings though its back and belly were green. it looked most like an eastern rosella but did not have the white patch under its beak instead it had a red patch.
I wish I had a photo but my camera is out of batteries at the moment.
Wollemi
Hey Wollemi - sounds like a red-rumped parrot :)
Cheers
Holly
I don't think red-rumped's have distinctive red markings on its head.
If they were about 20cm head-to-tail, may have been a musk lorikeet. If smaller, a little lorikeet.
