Hi all, apologies for poor pics... this bird was along way off in the middle of a lake, I have been all through my bird book with no luck at identifying. Smaller than a duck, maybe about the size of a gull but with a short tail. Lake Beaufort.Vic.

Gidday Hev, That is a "Eurasian Coot".
They spend much of their time on large open areas of water diving for most of their food.
They do not have webbed feet, their toes have "lobes" despite not having webbed feet they are very competent little swimmers.
So there you have it. :)
Cheers.
Hi Tassie...so it is. Thanks..don't know why I couldn't find it before in the bird book, probably because I was looking under ducks and its a coot.
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best
Yep, that sure might have had something to do with it Hev.
:)
