Kind of had a busy day today, but managed to sneak in a spot of birding this afternoon. I went to Daisy Hill forest, and found a plague of crows, and not much else. (All the watering holes and creeks are almost completely gone now... need rain...) As I was driving back from there, I passed a couple of Wood ducks on the side of the road, with two tiny little fluffy forms.
I stopped and walked back to them, to find two tiny tiny ducklings with mum and dad. Dawww. They were happy for me to stand around taking their pics. As I was leaving, a couple walking on the footpath told me of a family of 6 ducklings at a local park
MOARRRR DUCKLINGS? I'M TOTALLY THERE!
Now Wood Ducks aren't the most popular duck in my family. I grew up on a lettuce farm, and Wood Ducks enjoyed eating lettuce almost as much as us humans do. So to my parents, they were a pest and a menace. I've always had a more philosophical approach - Wood ducks don't know they're meant to be mean, Indian Mynahs aren't by their nature evil things, it's just what they are.
Anyway, I toddled off to the local park, and discovered not 6, but 8 ducklings!
Now some terrible, inconsiderate, probably well-intentioned person had obviously been throwing bread to the ducks. Which made me grumpy. But these people aren't inherently evil, and probably don't know any better.
Anyway, TL:DR - here are the ducklings!
The funny thing was, I only had my 150-500 lens with me, and after I sat down on the grass, the ickle duckies kept coming right up to where I was sitting, and I couldn't focus that close. Nice problem to have.
Awwww, cute overload windshear. Oh yes, I hear what you're saying - I'll swap too close over too far any day I think Wood ducks have the sweetest, almost round, little faces, and their cute short little beaks....nawww. I would have been in ducky heaven for sure! That second to last profile shot of mum & baby just has to be one of my favourites - beautiful series! Thanks!

Oh my goodness how adorable, I do love Wood Ducks and thier little ducklings with their orange caps on their little beaks. I too had a fantastic time today with ducklings , slightly bigger than these ones and of the Shleduck kind , 9 in total. I must post some photos I am sure out of the 2000 photos I took there should be one or two I can share , hehehehe. BTW I agree with RubyE the second last shot of mum and baby made my heart melt.

Thanks for sharing such lovely photos
One of my favourites is photo number six. The little ducky looks like it has a halo!
So sweet
Aww how absolutely delightful! I still can't comprehend that wood ducks breed in hollows - it blows my mind!
Lovely windshear!
I was out at Daisy Hill myself on Saturday morning, up near the Koala Centre and over towards the western side from there.
There were a stack of crows around there too, but I also saw a couple of pairs of Eastern Whipbirds out and about almost oblivious to my presence, as well as hearing a few Sacred Kingfishers calling, though I didn't see them.
Cheers

Ack! My unicorns! (whipbirds)
Heheh. I didn't have a lot of time, so I just went down the Dennis Road end where I go if I'm feeling lazy. There's a couple of pairs of Kookaburras nesting in that area although their fishing pools aren't quite as deep/numerous as they used to be. I quite regularly see two pairs sitting in the one tree staring hopefully at a pond.
Thanks Ruby, Shoop, Elsie and Holly!
I guess I've never really considered how/where ducks nested.
Bingo!
I walked from the Koala centre down to the paperbark swamp and then up around the firetrail to the Dennis Rd entrance and then back via the Tree Discovery Trail myself.
I didn't even know the Dennis Rd entrance existed till Saturday, as I usually go out there mountain biking from the top carpark or from Underwood Rd.
Cheers
