Just an idea.........

What would members think about having a BIBY plaque at their front gate/letter box? BIBY needs to advertise its existence, grow its membership and get the "message" across. This might be a good way of drawing attention and interest. BIBY could have the plaques made and sell them as a source of income. Just like there are plaques/signs for children's safe houses and gay-friendly establishments, a BIBY plaque could represent a place that is a safe haven for native birds. I would be interested in other's views.

personally,i would prefer i badge of some sort that could be worn when out birding, but that's my opinion. i just think that most people wouldn't care about a plate on a letterbox, but i know that there are lots of birders in my area who don't know about BIBY,so maybe the badge idea would introduce them to this website.

but thats just my opinion,it's probably not the best

Could possibly do both, there are many things which can be used to advertise, and in the age of computer graphics not always expensive.

I have raised that same question a while ago, without getting much of a resonse. I would have loved to have a badge, but I can see the logistics behind it. Who will make them, send them out....etc? We would need a logo that could be downloaded, that way we could make our own badges. Cheap to buy those little machines , badges are about 20cents each to make.

I would just wear them when out birding, so we could recognize members.

I guess giving members the option of either (or both) a plaque/badge would be the way to go. More opinions?

Hi guys

Keep the ideas coming - it is something I have been thinking about for a while as well. Glad to know that you all would value having one! Our thoughts have been for a BIBY plaque or garden flag to notify having a bird-friendly garden - the badge is another great thought too.

Cheers

Having a notice advertising a member's residence as bird-friendly would be well worth trying, I think. It may well bring out of the closet people in the neighbourhood who have some interest in birds but have never done anything about it or who would like to know more about birds. Conversations over the side fence & at the letter box may take on a new flavour.

Well said Woko. By all means bring those twitchers out of the closet.

I am interested and so is Holly I know, in what members might think of thisi idea... i have a friend who is in the business of making garden flags, and I made one up  just with my own image for Holly to see.  Would any members like this idea to encourage their neighbourhood do you think? You can be frank as this was just an idea and the design , words and image could be anything. I flew it outside my house one day and noticed someone slowing down to read it....probably just though some mad bird lady lives there but ha ha ...who cares ?

Just re read your comment Woko...conversations over the side fence at all would be nice these days :)   Neighbourhoods aren't what they used to be sadly in many cases

Love your sign, birdie. Very striking & I'm confident it's making an impact. Even if people don't talk about it over the back fence the message sinks in over time. It's what advertisers rely on to make billions of dollars.

Yes, you're probably right about the silence of the fences these days. When I lived in Adelaide many years ago I used to walk to & from work but rarely saw anyone in a front yard. People's preference for cars as a mode of transport & centralization of shopping etc. would contribute to the lack of social activity in modern neighbourhoods, I guess.

Maybe  a Biby shop , badges , stickers , plaques , caps , embroided badges to put on hats and shirts . Lot's of other groups do this sort of thing .

All would be great Neil - but with only a couple of us as staff (and only me full-time), we would need to make sure we could fill orders etc in a quick enough time.

Ultimately I would like to have a couple of options for people but it is still a little ways off getting developed. Its fantastic to know that there are people out there that want this though!
