that not all my spare time is spent at sea photographing birds.
I had to drive no more than ten minutes from home to-day to take these shots this morning. A pleasant change from an hour and a half drive followed by three and a half hour sail to the Continental shelf. One tick for the day, a Painted Button Quail but not a very good shot at all. My Australian birds photographed list is now 321. I also managed to get a photograph of the rump of a Spectacled Monarch whilst the person with me got a stunning shot. That would have also been a tick if I had been a bit quicker off the draw.
One of my all time favourites has to be the Jacana. I'm determined to get close to this bird this year. A shot of the bird about to land.
This Intermediate Egret really impressed me and had a 100% success rate whilst I watched him/her fishing. Taken at 1/5000 of a second at 10 frames per second. The next frame was of the tiny fish in the bill followed by the fish swallowed alive. So quick!
Another fish about to be swallowed alive.
Meanwhile this male Mallard in the background was quite determined to have his photograph taken. Good looking bird.
I almost stood on this Noisy Pitta this morning. I don't know who was most surprised.
Probably by now the most photographed Australian Owlet Nightjar in SE Queensland. Very sleepy and very cute.
Im glad you do get some shore leave !
Amazing photos of the Jacana and the heron fishing. Very nice one of the noisy pitta too.
Well done still getting new ticks as well.
Great set, Reflex. Love the Jacana shot. The first time i saw these was at Cooktown, i was not into birds yet and had the worst lens Canon have ever made ( 75-300 non usm non stabilized ) and you don't try to get closer to the bank for a shot unless you want to be Croc tucker :)

That Jacana shot is spectacular! Love the Pitta and very interesting about the speed of the egret.
So if are out at sea all the time and yet still find time to photograph birds from solid land, that could only mean... you're photographing birds 24/7

Awesome shots John. Am jealous of the Jacana image! Fantastic.
Fantastic set of shots John. Jacana is a beauty but lovely group overall.
Superb photo of the Jacana !
Some good action shots John. That would be your best Jacana shot yet!
I love the Jacana shot! If you had said it was jumping backwards in fright instead of about to land I would have neearly believed you!. All beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing.
Happy Birding!
