Juv Grey Butcherbird in nest

While walking down my usual path the other day I found this little family scene .... the mother BB was busily digging up bugs and stuff for dinner for the youngster. Very cute in a lovely flowering Jacaranda tree.

Initially I didnt have my camera with me , and it was just after breakfast when i saw them, the light was much better then and coming in at a better angle. I had to go back int he afternoon with my camera to get the above shots and unfortuantely the light was behind the nest......  when I got my new little compact camera i was keen to take a shot and compare it with these but this is all I got

The youngster had flown the nest within just a few days, but my 20X zoom on the little camera did a reasonable job  even if the nest was empty !!!

Nice photos Adrienne, you say you used the little camera, pretty good results. This looks good with the Jacaranda flowers in the background.

Thanks, I was disappoointed that it had flown the coup before I got a chance to try out the little camera on it.  I had thought that Butcher Bird nests were bigger than this, but maybe the Pied Butcher bird makes the messier one as that is the kin I have seen before. Not sure if the two  would make different nests or not, will have to look it up

These are great shots Adrienne.Your little camera is doing a fine job. Its great when you can go out for a walk and just pop it into your pocket. They have such a lovely call dont they? The Jacaranda makes a lovely backdrop. We have one in our garden and the colours are so magic. I always wonder how they make their nests so the eggs dont fall out as they dont always look so neat.

We have a nest in our ivanhoe at the moment (think its just a sparrows as the eggs are blue) but we think its been abandoned as i only noticed it yesterday morning when i was weeding and have not noticed anything going to sit on the nest at all since then There was a cat in the yard yesterday maybe it has scared the bird away who knows. Hopefully something comes back to sit on it as it has three eggs in it.
