I was out walking along the Brisbane River this afternoon, and was looking for birds amongst a small patch of mangroves when I saw this kingfisher sitting on a low branch, chilling with me ol' mate Mrs Darter who was sunning herself.
Hopefully the pics are clear enough, the sun was in a particularly horrible place.
Seems to fit other pictures I've seen of a Juvenile Sacred Kingfisher.
Any thoughts?
Yes. Sacred. The buff with brown scallops on its chest, distinct from the white throat, separates it more obviously from juvenille Collared Kingfisher. I consulted all my field guides on this one just to be certain. Simpson & Day illustrates the Collared juv. very well. Some other guides don't depict the juv Collared at all, which is an oversight! Thanks Lorne.
I need to invest in some more guides. But as with all things hobby-wise, funds are limited.
A pleasure, Windshear. Yeah, it's a pain the Aussie bird guides are so damn dear. Don't forget Big W and online sources such as Fishpond for markdowns. Lorne.
