Juvenile White Faced Heron

This was taken yesterday at the mangrove boardwalk at Wynnum.  The bird was so small I wondered if I had identified it correctly.  It must be a youngster.  Sorry the pic isn't the greatest, but I wanted to show the swirl the bird was creating as it foraged for a snack.

I think it is a lovely shot Karen! The water looks brilliant.

Thank you Holly.  The mangrove swamp is rather dark and murky, but this bird found a small circle of light to forage in.  It made it hard to get the focus right.  My partner took the photo as my eyes are getting worse with cataracts.  Luckily my hospital appointment is coming up fast, so hopefully they will fix the problem so I can take my own pics again.  I loved how he stirred up the water to try to get something to pop up (like one of the very many small crabs that live in the muddy waters).

Thank you M-L.  One more week to go and hopefully I'll get the verdict and what they're going to do about it.

I've always love the white faced herons.  They used to wander around in my back yard a lot but they seem to have moved on now.  Never seen one this young though.

Very nice. I like the sense of movement with the blurred legs.

Good photo Karen and I know exactly how dark it is in there amongst the Mangroves at Wynnum, you've done well getting the Heron in a small patch of light.

Thanks Shane.  It is a rather spooky sort of place, isn't it.

Correa and Windhover, thank you too.  I really put the pic up because of the way it was stirring the water with its foot.  Very clever, I thought.

good pic Karen and great to get the action of the bird hunting

I believe that the white on the face increases as the bird matures - I have pics of 3 different birds with smaller amounts of white on the face and I have labelled these as juvenile, this 1 is from Mango Hill, Qld in Jan '11

Yes, not much white on that one, is there.  The one we saw had white feathers through the grey as well as being very small for a heron.  I had one on my roof one day being dive bombed by a mickey bird.  Not much detail as it was high and I was facing into the sun.
