Some may disagree, but I think they're a very beautiful bird - their markings are just srtiking, and that beak!  Love the last shot through the grasses & pussy willows Barney, lovely!

yes l agree Annie they are a very attractive bird , similar appeal to that of a pheasant coucal up close.

l 'stalked' this bird on hands and knees till l was 10m away , got 2 photos then she saw me and flew OVER me to a large tree high up. l think she was having a look to see what l was haha,

laughlaugh  Sounds like many of my bird photography attempts Barney, I'm now convinced they do see me from the get go, and fly off at the last minute just to say "ha ha" laugh.  The journey of the seeing & "getting" is all good fun though!

Nice pics barney

You told us you had spotted 4 snake species around your "shack" and yet you crawl through the grass on hands and knees to get your pics ... you deserve some sort of birds in backyards bravery award.

I must be too much of a city guy or not dedicated enough ... I'd have  severe camera shake from worry about the snakes.

Barney

snakes are ok WD , they mostly slip away from you at high speed.

did see a large brown the other day which widened my eyes and increased my heart rate considerably haha

Would have me going in reverse at high speed

richman

I was photgraphing one yesterday when my camera seized. Looks like I will be without a camera for a while. Oh, woe is me, I guess my trip to Jerrabomberra wetlands is off.

Barney

sorry to hear about your camera richman , but if you are as you say , a 'richman' you can easily replace it :)

my camera causes me no end of frustration with regard to bird photography. its great for 'normal' stuff , but birds , especially small birds , do both its , and my head in.

l am seriously considering scrounging the funds to get another camera [dslr] and a 100-300 lens.

anyways , i snapped the local female koel again today. my photograph skills lack severely tho.

richman

Thats the funny thing Richman is a poor man. 'Richman' comes from the adding first part and the last parts of my full name. The camera was an old one (40D) and only 10mp. If I get a new one it'll be on the card plus I will have to fix it anyway. (as well) ouch.

I think the koels are rather attractive birds until they open their beaks. Such a differemce between the sexs much like the Satin Bower birds in some ways. I do find the female quite attracrive (not in a weird way)The one that I saw was in a low young tree about 3m from me and only about 10 degrees up from eye level, perfect for a nice clean shot. (sounds like the one that got away)
