Just going through some old photographs from a Cape York trip and came across this photograph of a Frigatebird taken at Seisa beach at Cape York in September 2013.
There are three different types of Frigatebird but I think this is the Lesser Frigatebird. Red patch under the chin denotes male and all three male frigatebirds have this. Only the male Lesser Frigatebird has the white patch on the shoulder?
Hello, I am pleased to see that someone is almost as far behind in sorting pics as me
I have seen Christmas Island and Greater Frigatebirds so I can't help.
You are right; the Lesser Frigatebird has spurs of white feathers from the breast and through the armpit; I can't see them in your pic but that might be my monitor
Peter
With all dark underparts, it would have to be an adult male Great Frigatebird.
I think the apparent white on the shoulder is possibly bright light reflecting off shiny feathers.
Many Thanks guys!
