One thing bird watching has shown me is not only is there a hierarchy of dominance between bird species but also within bird species and the outworking of this makes for some of the best pics.

Rather than being behaviour establishing hierarchies, I suspect some aggressive behaviour within bird species is actually adult birds teaching their young to be less dependent & more independent. I've particularly noticed this among New Holland honeyeaters.

I agree BajanAlan. Sometimes though the birds don't like others watching.
