Long Weekend Birding

Ove the long weekend I did manage to get out a couple of times. One time I brought my 8 year old and he enjoyed it but can't retain the interest level long enough. I let him use a Canon 600D with a Tamron 18-270mm lens. There were some Guinea Fowl there so he enhoyed taking photos of them. Here are just a few of the ones I got. The Buff-Banded Rail was a new one for me.

Buff-Banded Rail

Rainbow Bee-eater

Fairy Wrens

Olive-Backed Oriole

Rufous Whistler

Black-Faced Monarch

Pair or Pardalotes

Mistletoebird Displaying

Muddy Sacred Kingfisher

All those pics are fantastic! A great variety....My favourites would have to be the fairy wrens and the rainbow bee-eater. Great Job!

Nice set of photos Devster. Its way too hard to pick a favourite, but I really like how you've managed to capture the mistletoebird in such a interesting pose. They are so hard to photograph without anything in the way

Great variety and all fantastic devster.

The ones that catch my eye are the fairy wren pair with identical pose (I see one has lot of leg bling), and I like your muddy kingfisher.

Thanks Birdy, Rick, Reflex & BL. The Mistletoebird is not a great shot as he was up high and in the shade. But he was showing off to a lady nearby. He would have his head and tail up, then put them down, then up again. He was trying so hard, then she flew off and he was in hot pursuit.

The Rail, I have been there a few times looking for it. I went around the area slowly 3 times as I knew one had been spotted around. I then sat, hoping and looking at every little movement and every leaf falling. I was just about to give up, I thought what do I have to do to see this dang bird. Thats when it came skulking out of the long grass and across the mangroves. Needless to say I was very excited!

Where did you photograph these birds?....I'm just curious to know because I'm trying to find some good places to do bird watching.

Canterbury Park in Bald Hills. There's Heaps of Birds there. Got the Rainbow Bee-eater and Fairy Wrens at Samsonvale but they are there also. I have also seen Whistling & Brahaminy Kites as well as Sea Eagles, Azure Kingfisher, cormorants, pelicans, Lorikeets, Galahs and many types of ducks there as well.
