Gorgeous bird but no idea what it is. Some sort of Finch?

Yes a finch Reflex. A male one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-cheeked_cordon-bleu and http://beautyofbirds.com/redcheekedcordonbleufinches.html

From Africa, and introduced to Hawaii. Didn't you ask the staff what it was?

 Thanks Owl, I should have done that. There was just sooooo many different birds there that I hadn't seen before.

I was in a bird photographers heaven.wink

 I saw my first California Quail as well...comical birds.

I used to breed them (RC cordons)

magnificent birds. 

if you like pretty finches check out Purple Grenadiers, Violet-eared Waxbills and Twinspots.
