Medium Sized Black Bird

I think this fellow might be a immature / juvenile Spangled Drongo?

Was at Sydney Olympic park -  appeared to be about the same size as a butcher bird. I noticed when it flew off a pronounced rising and dipping in peaks and troughs sort of way of flying.

The moment the photo loaded whithout reading the text first thoughts were butcher bird.

Hmmmm will be interesting to see others opinions.

Cheers Beef.

Definitely looks like a Drongo to me, even before I read your info.
Whether its a juvenile or not, I'm not sure.

Certainly a Spangled Drongo, they are found south to the Victorian border. They do have migratory patterns, but I'm not sure what they are. There have certainly been a number of sightings of Spangled Drongos in Sydney over the last few weeks on Birdline, even in Olympic Park. I'd say it's an immature bird, as it doesn't have the noticeably red eye. Plus, it has the characteristic fishtail tail.

Beef, it's not a Butcherbird, as you only get Pied and Grey Butcherbirds (mostly grey) in the Sydney region. It does look like a potential Black Butcherbird, but they are a northern speciality.
