This happened very fast, too fast to focus
The one on the left (in the photo) was trying to kill the other one, while the girl (?) was watching and screaming at them. I had to make a decision , take better photos, (very tempting) or step in. Well, I chased them off. They most likely killed each other behind the shed
Do you think those two were rivals fighting over who would get the girl?

I suspect they were fighting over the girl, but i don't think death would have been the end result (just a battered ego and some wounds)

I suspect it was for the girl too. I find it hard to see nature at it's natural best too sometimes, but I'm a softie like that. Survival of the fittest and all that, but it can look pretty brutal, can't it? Saw two swans going at it today in the park, I wasn't fast enough to get more than one shot off - might have had something to do with trying to run backwards to get out of their way though, they didn't care I was there! I must have looked a funny sight though, slipping all over the place in duck poop as I ran
