Not many months after I started writing my blog about South Gippsland, I had the pleasure of watching and recording the start of a new family of Wattlebirds. I was able to watch the chicks grow from nest bound to getting about on the branches and finally making it on their own.
I was reminded of this while sitting on our veranda with our two hounds this evening, when a Wattlebird came to see what was going on with all the visitors in our yard. Usually they are about in the early morning, but this is the first time that they've announced their presence while all the other birds are about. Even one of our Balckbirds was here this evening.
Its always a great experience to watch the development of young from nestling to adults. Thanks for sharing :)

Good work, always a pleasure to watch and experience how birds grow.
Sometimes watching them works out without a happy ending but that's nature.

It's always interesting to see a parent put their own safety second in order to attend to the young.
Quite a good looking bird in a lot of ways but I have often wondered what purpose, if any, the red fleshy growths or "wattles" that hang from its cheeks serve.

Great shots, especially the last one. We don't get them up this way so I would love to see one of these one day.
to differentiate them from Yellow Wattlebirds ;-))

I thought the Yellow Wattlebird was endemic to Tasmania.
PS. I might be up your way in the next week or so.

Thanks all. I've been away in the High Country and couldn't respond earlier. Horrible weather was had, so not much in the way of photographs.
