Well done Rick! All the photos are amazing and it seems you were extremely close to the heron but I have to say my favourite ones are the 2nd and the 3rd photos, the pose and eye contact is killer in these shots.
These are great Rick ... number 3 is my favourite ...... I have only ever managed one sighting and pic of one ...... and nothing like these that is for sure!
I do find them very secretive birds , I have seen a few at Tomato Lake ( but hence you have to look for them) they like to hide in amongst the mangroves. There was one i saw , to me it looked ''impaled'' so I had to phone the nearest rescues centre to help as it would not last the day without water and food burning alot of energy trying to free itself. Thank goodness it was just fishing line wrapped around its wing not the stake i thought it was impaled on. I wonder what purpose the long white feather /s have ???whether they are for mating purposes??? I would like to know.?
Hi shoop, the long white feathers are also known as their breeding plumes hence they are used to indicate whether they are in breeding season and I believe they are also used to attract the opposite sex. Both males and females have breeding plumes.
OH I just love it he looks as though he is doing one of those fish faces , you know the one I am talking about when you suck your cheeks in while moving your lips together. Beautiful photos , and yes beautiful bird .
