Night bird

Does anyone know what this bird is?  My spy camera spotted it.  It is obviously a night picture, so not very clear, but I guess that helps narrow down what bird it might be!  This is in Gippsland...

It looks like a species of Frogmouth to me

Hmmm ... you could be right.  I thought it might be a boobook, since I have heard them about.

It looks like a Frogmouth to me too. Being Gippsland, it'd be a Tawny Frogmouth.
AFAIK, Booboks aren't usually found at ground level, but Tawnies are occaisonally. Its wing pattern and head shape looks like that of a Tawny too. A Boobook would have a flatter face, and you'd probably be able to see its 'spectacles'.

Thanks, all.

No, I have never seen them around before, although I have assumed they are about.  I have seen several boobooks and a powerful (or possibly barking) owl.

I have definitely seen a boobook at ground level.  In fact I saw 2 in the same night (or possibly the same one twice, but the locations were 500m apart).  It may have been a juvenile, as it seemed a bit slow to respond to my approaching vehicle!

Interesting, I thought they usually grabbed stuff and retreated back into the trees, or onto posts. Mind you, I never seem to see many owls... sad

I'll keep that in mind, thanks Soakes.
