The juvenile fan-tailed cuckoo seems best match in my book, except the book notes a prominent yellow eye-ring which I can see in other online photos of this species. Another candidate might be a little wattle bird, except my bird's head seems much darker. Orford, Tasmania (east coast). I have other shots if necessary

Yep definitely a wattle bird. The fantailed cuckoo would have a much "smoother" looking chest, both less ruffled and less patterned I think.
