I've been busy with family dramas lately, and really haven't had the time or emotional energy to do much birding lately. I spotted on the ebird website that there had been several sightings of Osprey at my favourite Wynnum Wetlands, and I just had to go and check it out.
There's an Osprey nest on a big pole, but I've never seen it in use when I've been there. Looks like a pair have set themselves up there this season though.
One was sitting on the nest by itself for quite a while waiting for the other to come back. So I happily sat in the shade waiting. When it finally did return (empty taloned) it got a right old beakful about lax hunting skills. (I'm guessing) It fluffed its feathers, flapped its wings a bit, and then took off again.

Good that you were able to have a break from your other concerns and get such rewarding results. Lovely shots in the evening sun.
That's a sturdy structure they have used to support the nest - what is it meant for?
Is this same area where you photographed the sea eagle recently?
I believe it's a purpose-built for the nest. (a concrete pole maybe 30 metres tall, with a wooden platform on top of it)
It's been empty while I've been going there, although I might have missed last year's breeding season.
No, this is a different set of wetlands to the one where I spotted the eagle. But it's the same place where late last year I was able to follow a pair of Pacific Bazas nesting and raising their chicks.
Great to see it is in use Windshear .... we have a few up here on the Sunshine Coast and they have been used for years . Glad you were able to enjoy it and get some shots and now you know where to stalk!!!! ( or where to escape to when you feel drained...it always works for me too ! )
I have told the story on here years ago where the council had the nest of one pair moved to a platform like this because the barge in the river on which they had made their nest was going to be moved. It was a great and very successful operation and they still breed from there and provide fantastic opportunities for us to practise There is another one that is popular at Osprey House down in Dohles Rock...have you ever been there?
Happy Osprey watching

Thanks for the info windshear ..... good that the ideas to encourage them to nest in the area are working. They will need to get used to visiting photographers
The good thing Whistling Duck is that the towers are high enough for us to not be disruptive. I was walking one day with my friend in Twin waters here on the Coast ..... and in the treed area I saw droppings so looked up and said oh look there is an Osprey Tower here...... she said she has been walking through there for 9 years and had never seen it!!! It was a bit more disguised than most with tress the same height surrounding it . It is wonderful that local councils and environmental groups get behind this kind of stuff.

Re Osprey House - Yes, I was up that way last year, and got some good pics. There are a few very nice places to bird-watch in that area. Been meaning to go again, but it's a bit of a drive.
Isn't it funny how nature seems to be happy to work around us occasionally, if we throw a little helping hand their way. (better than the usual attitude that people often have.)
This particular tower is quite conspicuous - it's in the middle of an open field where people play soccer/golf and walk their dogs.
It doesnt seem to bother them and that is great!!!! So long as the humans dont include anybody stupid who may try something stupid, thankfully they do not land often down low in such a place so they should be fine. I must get a new shot of the Telstra tower here at the Sunshine Plaza ... they have given them a Steel basket to keep the nest under control and regularly trim the nest for them too. As far as I know the same pair or their offspring have been nesting there year round since before I worked in the Camera House there way back in 2003 ..... it makes a good test point for long lenses and binoculars
If you ever come up this way birding feel free to give me a message !!

Yes, Birdie. Councils & other authorities which do good environmental things need to be told of our appreciation.
I know the platform you are talking about, windshear.
I suspect (though don't know) that it may have been put up by the power company to provide a better alternative than nesting on the poles of the high voltage power lines in the area.
Cheers

Maybe so Tim. Better than electrified Osprey. :P
