Probably a dumb question

this is probably a dumb question but is there any quick way to tell a Hobby & a peregrine falcon apart when they fly over - i have been working on the fact that the peregrine's tail always seems to be fanned but maybe i'm kidding myself and all i have is a Hobby
like this photo i said was a peregrine?

thanks :))

Hi myky50, no question is ever a dump question! A hobby is much darker and has less white around it's neck. Another feature of the peregrine is that it's 'hips' are much more broad. I also notice the wing tips in a peregrine are more spread out then the hobby. This photo definitely looks like a peregrine falcon to me.
Maybe someone more experienced can help you better.

woo hoo thank you cooee - i will copy what you said and study my pics - more white around the neck and a lighter colour may be the quickest things to pick up - thanks for varifying what i thought but really it was more what i hoped i think :)

It is very hard to tell the difference. Hobby has buff replacing the white of a Peregrine Falcon. They also lack the yellow eye ring, instead they have a grey one. They are smaller but their wings are very long and thin compared to its body. That was not at all a stupid question.

Cheers, Owen.
