From time to time, but very rarely, I see one of those on my property. They come out of the dense bush behind me, I assume from where a creek runs? Usually when I try to get closer, they very quickly run back to hide in the undergrowth. Yesterday I spotted two huddled close together, they were very small and could be young ones? While I stood still and stopped breathing, I managed to take some photos from very close. Can anybody tell me what kind of Quail they are? I looked in my book and think they might Button Quails (King Quails)? But, as always, I might be wrong.
I've no clue what sort they are...but they definitely get my vote for Best Feathers!
Araminta - I suggest Painted Button-quail (the only Button-quail that I have seen)

Beautiful bird and photos ... thanks for sharing.
I'll go with the Painted Button-quail then, thanks Peter. Do you think they were Babies? Or are they very small?

Hi Araminta,
Great photos as usual, love the colours. I beleive that the painted button quails are juvenilles as in the first photos you can see they still have some very fluffy younger feathers that lack any colouration.

Lovely pics, M-L. I see Brown Quails every now and then at my regular wetland haunts, but they always take flight, or scurry away into the long grass.
