Rainbow Bee Eaters and Brown Honeyeaters

I have been busy doing things other than birding lately, but I took myself out to the local cricket ground to look for rainbow bee-eaters that nest there every year. Sure enough, there was about a dozen or so of them flying around. As I was leaving, I found a small group of Brown Honeyeaters making good use of the dog watering bowl for a bath, and as a drink. (where they nest is in a dog off leash park)

Saw the Bee-Eaters flying in and out of their nests every now and then, but they're very unpredictable, and as they nest in tunnels on the ground, you have to catch them at just the right moment. indecision

Still had a good afternoon, and got to watch some cricket as well. smiley

Great photos windshear - beautiful shots.

It seems too easy for you!! Just head down to the local cricket ground and see the bee eaters!  laugh Well done.

The arrival of Bee-eaters and the start of the cricket season are two iconic (if that's the right word) events that herald the start of summer in Queensland for me these days, although somewhat saddened this year by the unfortunate death of Phillip Hughes.

They really are such good looking birds. In the fifth and sixth photograph you can see that the bill has been busy digging out the nesting site. It has been so dry over the last three or four months here that the Brown honey-eaters in SE Queensland would be appreciating the dogs watering bowls at the moment.

Hopefully we'll get some decent rainfall here soon. The two severe rain cells that went through Brisbane last week missed my area completely.

Yes, that was very sad. :(

They've been busy little bee-eaters. I counted five nests that I could see, although I think it would be mostly a Reno job for them since they nest there every year. :)

Terrific stuff windshear, you've got some gorgeous shots there.  I'd love to see those RB beauties one day.  What dog watering bowl?  That's a custom bird bath if ever I saw one winklaugh

True enough. smiley The joke's on the dogs who have to drink out of it afterwards. laugh
