This lori turned up in our garden around 2 months ago as a baby...he had no tail feathers then. They have grown since then but his wing feathers are curled and he can't fly....his parents dont' feed him anymore, but they still visit, but we're at a loss at what we can do to help him. He doesn't appear sick, but obviously there is an underlying problem. I've attached a couple of photos. Does anyone know what this could be?
It doesn't look like the dreaded beak & feather disease but just to be on the safe side I'd do two things:
1. Cease any artificial feeding of birds in your garden because artificial feeding points are a prime location for lorikeets & parrots to pass on beak & feather disease to each other.
2. If you still wish to attract Rainbow Lorikeets & other native birds to your garden then plant indigenous native plants to provide them with natural food & natural habitat.
In the meantime other Backyarders might be able to accurately identify the problem with this bird's feathers. If the problem isn't beak & feather disease I'd still be inclined to do 1 & 2 above.
