Oh he is a bit of a character, so photogenic I have to agree with WhistlingDuck he does remind me too of a hippo. Really enjoyed this series of photos, all the different angles and with showing the bird engaging in its normal duties. It breaks it up from seeing birds just in the standing/perching pose position . I have yet to get a photo of one of these regal birds.
Richman, yes it is quite heavy compared to my usual 30mm f4. I am still getting used to the lens but suffice to say I also invested in a new heavier tripod :-)
Shoop, thanks for that. He was a bit of a character, very flighty and bossy.
As an aside I was watching a Yellow billed about a month ago knocking ducks right and left as he walked across a low, thin, concrete wall separating two ponds.
About a dozen ducks were settled enjoying the sun and he would just smack them into the water with his bill as he cleared his way. One right then one left etc. Funniest thing I have seen in a long time.
Love these shots Rick, you've captured his character (not to mention the whites) brilliantly. Amazing bills these guys have, and that yellow almost brow always amuses me. I'm going to guess you're having more than a little fun with that new lens? +1 from me also for the hippo resemblance & bubbles trails in those shots.
Yep, I can completely understand that!! Do it all the time then think, oh, should have probably got a photo or two. Still, the photo in my head is often enough for me .
love those shots .... #3 is very regal
(the poses in #1 and #4 remind me of hippos!)
Great shots Rick. Love the bubbles on the water in the last photo.
(must be Spoonbill season, I took a few photos of some today, will post them some other time then)

I find this lens quite heavy (we have one at work). I have an older sigma 170-500mm which is much lighter.

I meant to ask...did you have your camera handy when the other Yellow billed was pinging ducks? Would have been hysterical to see that

Hi Annie,
I had the camera but was enjoying the spectacle too much to take any shots.
It really was amazing, the Spoonbill was smacking them really hard.
