Rufous night heron

Was about to practice some Birds in flight at gympie duck ponds when a local rushed up and said i have to photograph the solitary night heron perched nearby.

Okily dokily i said. apparently there are quite a few people who combine their morning/afternoon walk with some duck/swan/coot feeding. will try to get some better shots tomorrow.

Alas, Nankeen Night-herons have still managed to elude me- in fact, I think they have disappeared from the reliable local spots in recent months

These eluded me for quite some time, then I saw 3 in one morning. They are a nice looking bird. The darker background really brings out the bird. Thanks for sharing.

Would you say the cap is black? I think the field guides describe it as black - i dont have access to them at present - but to me it looks a dark slate grey/blue.

Are these the ponds to the side of the Bruce Highway?

Great shot.

Yes the duck ponds next to the bruce highway. the black swans will come right up to you, as will IBIS, coots and black ducks

the wood ducks , hardheads, and magpie geese hang back but are much tamer than wild birds.

A lot of people have dumped their pet ducks there as well. dumping is not restricted to cats and dogs it seems

Lovely shots. Those Nankeen Night Herons turn up in some interesting places.

I'll definitely be stopping there next time I'm up that way. I still need a Nankeen Night Heron for my list. Great shot of the breeding plumage on the male Darter. It almost looks like he has arranged those tail feathers just for the photo.
