SA Bird Sanctuary Proposal

SA posters will probably be aware by now of the magnificent proposal by the state government to establish an extensive bird sanctuary north of Adelaide. It will incorporate the soon-to-be-defunct industrial salt fields at Dry Creek (which were once part of a tidal system) & take in about 60 km of Gulf St Vincent coastline to the north. Minister of Environment Ian Hunter is even talking about making the sanctuary cat free so this will help contribute towards a pro-wildlife culture in SA if such a zone is established.

The area will eventually be about 7000 ha & will help with the preservation of aquatic birds, especially migratory birds which have suffered generally from the destruction of wetlands world wide.

It's anticipated that the sanctuary will attract bird watchers from around the planet, another example of how our economy is so dependent on the natural environment.

It's not often these days that a government plans something that is so beneficial to the environment &, in the long run, to our well-being. This is one of those occasions & the SA government is to be roundly congratulated.

It is fantastic news for birds and bird lovers that's for sure.

Hopefully the government does it's homework and gets it right.

That is fabulous news indeed!  It is such a shame that it takes most of us by surprise these days though isn't it, positive environmental planning/change by a Government body.  Would be a welcome trend to see more take their heads out of their you know's more often to live in the real (natural) world and take some more positive steps on a grand and broader scale.  This is a positive plan for sure, well done S.A. Gov.
