Same Easter trip, south east Tasmania, spolied with Shy and Buller's Albatross. Again I mention we are allowed to clean fish at sea (most species) and this attracts hungry birds.
A lot of people have never seen one and the sad truth is that future generations might never see one unless something is done about long-line fishing. I don’t expect fishermen to care about seabirds and I don’t expect them to use mitigation measures unless they benefit the fishermen – worrying about seabirds doesn’t fit well with the culture and practice of longline fishing and the money-making imperative that drives it.
a valueless (to them) albatross vs a fairly valuable tuna
times that by x amount of birds per trip x number of vessels
at least longlining is more selective (comparatively) targetting predators vs purse seining catching everything of a certain size around fish aggregation devices
and trawlers destroying the seabed/habitat in addition to catching everything
pole and line is probably best option
(farming tuna is a farce imo)
though i think we should be moving towards smaller faster-breeding/growing fish species (less mercury too)
What a cracker
Dont take life too seriously, it never ends well
I'm yet to see an albatross :(

Beautiful photographs again Dale. Love the almost eye shadow look around the eye.

oh but it does, seabird bycatch is a wasted hook

Thanks all, an impressive bird that needs to survive.
