I agree, it appears to be a Tattler. What location & what habitat?

Thanks Darin and Steve,

I agree its a Grey tailed Tattler.

Saw it in an estuary north of Ballina.

I didn't but Im not in Ballina. Its interesting though I saw the reports from all the way along the coast from Brisbane south to Sydney.

Yes, we had both Great & Lesser Frigatebirds in Ballina among a few other unusual Oswald blow-ins. Most of my sightings are on NSW Birdline http://www.eremaea.com/BirdlineRecentSightings.aspx?Birdline=2

Steve, do you own a Pizzey & Knight Field Guide? In the Lesser Frigatebird information it says that 83 Lesser Frigatebirds were seen in Ballina in April 1989.

Wandering Tattlers prefer rocky shores whereas Grey-tailed Tattler favours sand or mud, but both can appear together. So I assume your bird is a GT Tattler... Also, the eyebrow of a Grey-tailed extends and meets at the front of the forehead, and a Wandering's eyebrow is separated. Although you can't see this in your photo, it is a good tip for telling the two birds appart.

Also, here at Bargara, we too had Lesser Frigatebirds, House Swift, Bridled and Sooty Terns and Common Noddy.
