Hi all,
I'm wondering if any BiBY members live in the Elliott Heads / Bundaberg region and could recommend some birding spots. I'm planning to go there next year to see family and do some birding.
I won't be driving, so if anyone could recommend places that are within a not-too-expensive cab ride distance, that would be great. Or perhaps there are even places that are walking distance from Elliott Heads?
If I'm really lucky, there might be some locals who would be happy to show me around their local patch?
Andy.
Sorry it is a bit late, but if you are ever in Bundy again, here is some great little reserves within 15-20 mins from town...
Bargara Pasterage Reserve - Eucalypt wetlends (great in spring and autumn), starts at Bargara State School and ends at Mon Repos (2km walk)... Great bushbirds and Rose-crowned Fruit-dove.
Baldwin Swamp - Right in the middle of town (enter from Que Hee St)... not a serious birding spot but is an enjoyable walk through a mix of habitats and easy to get close to birds (if you're a photographer). Popular for Cotton Pygmy-geese and Night-herons.
Meadowvale Reserve - Over North side, along Bundaberg/Lowmead Rd... A mix of habitats (woodland, wet forest and heath along a creek). Great for Honeyeaters in autumn.
Gorman's Park - If you're after waders, here is the place at Burnett Heads. Mangroves, Mudflats, rocky shoreline and a rock wall for cormorants and other sea-going birds. Nearby is a track which goes to the wall follow that and turn right, follow the path and there is a small wetland where Baillon's Crake is often seen.

Thanks Brandon! That's very helpful information :-) It's great to know the types of birds that I might see in each location. Much appreciated.
Oh and I forgot Smith's Crossing (can't remember how to get there) which often has a pair of breeding Square-tailed Kites...
