Apart from the gannet at the beach we also had this tern give us quite an aerial display... someone will have to help me ID it but this was taken using the Canon 400.6L too in harsh lighting conditions

Ohhh, very nice flight shot there indeed birdie! Beautiful wing and tail detail, lovely sharp head, I can see right through his nostril! Better than up it I suppose If I were to guess, ummmm, non breeding Common Tern? Best wait for someone more experienced than me on the ID though.

Thanks AnnieJ .... Fb has given me two different ones already ..... not sure where all the experts have gone around the place lately, the same thing happened when I asked for Crow/Raven ID on a FB group the other day.
Neverthe less I was very happy with this shot...whatever it is.. He was not moving slowly in the wind ... but slower than the gannet ha ha

Magic shot birdie, can't help with the ID. Don't you just hate overcast days, have had so many lately. Working towards a BIF tern shot like that.
Yeah I dont think it was so much overcast as I was shooting into the light...will have to check other shots ... What do you think of the editing I am always worried that I have gone too far but I like the look .... but it does blow the sky out unfortunately
Thanks for your nice comments Rick

I think you've done very well to get the detail in the bird with that background. These are not easy shots to take and terns seem to be always moving fast. Can't see any problem with the editing. Cheers
Thansk Rick , I had to deliberately blow the background to get the underside of the bird, still a bit underexposed but was happy with it.
Juvenile Crested tern was the ID also.
