I have a pair of mainly brown birds nesting in my backyard. Nest is large and appears to be made out of tree twigs
Am I correct that the above do not make a screeching sound whilst in flight.
If so what could they be.

Probably need some more information to help - any chance you can get a photo if they are nesting in your garden? How cool to have birds of prey in your own back yard :-) I'm not sure if sparrowhawks call on the wing, but they are quite distinctive, more grey than brown with strong barring on chest. Black & whistling kites are more predominantly brown, and do make a whistling screeching call when flying - maybe check them out?
Thanks Alex...wish I had a suitable camera.
The sound whilst flying is a little similar to cockatoos, but not as loud.
Try browsing some of the bird sounds on xeno-canto and see if you can find it. Link https://www.xeno-canto.org/species/Haliastur-sphenurus will take you to whistling kite, but you can search for others.
