Thanks guys for all the help - its the first time we have seen one here in Brisbane so it was very exiting -it flew several low circuits around our house - they have chooks next door so we were wondering if he/she had spied them...Its re-inforced my mantra to alway have my camera handy - with charged batteries!
I notice incidentaly on the 'Birds Queensland' list of sightings that one was seen some weeks ago at the Gap - a suburb some 10 kms away so it may have been the same individual??
I am not a raptor expert but it appears to be a Square-tailed Kite
to comment on the 'rare' we would need to know your state & city/town
Peter
Yes, Square-tailed kite and nice pics too. They are mostly rare and the only place they are reliable I've heard of is the hills around Perth.
Cheers, Owen.
Because square-tailed kites are uncommon I'd be interested to know in what region you live, ZambeziBoy.
I believe he is a Brissy boy which would make this rare indeed.

Shane
I do like these photos ZambeziBoy and wish I could get some similar BIF photos.;

Shane
Yes, and it's an adult.
Rare, depending on where you saw it I guess. They are reasonably common in the Hawkesbury region of Sydney around summer/autumn.
They move south to breed in late winter and go back north during autumn, returning around late July. That's my area at least.
cheers
