Striated Pardalotes

An Xmas visit to the Nullabor provided the opportunity to see some different species.  These were taken at Weebubbie Cave approx 15kl from Eucla. They were nesting in the walls of the doline, badly outnumbered by hundreds of Welcome Swallows.

Cheers

I know that strange things have been seen on the Nullarbor Plain, Rick, but should your Weclome Sparrows be Welcome Swallows?

Sparrows are mostly unwelcome. :)

I couldn't get the joke, because you edited itdevil

Anyway, the birds look very funny, is the first one a juvenile changing plumage? Great photos, I like themyes

Thanks Araminta,

Before the edit I had mistakenly typed "Welcome Sparrows"smiley hence the later references.

Don't think it was a juvenile, just wind ruffled.

We were camping near the doline and each morning I would see the adult birds returning with food. They would perch on the twigs and check that the coast was clear before flying down to the nest, this explains there downward facing orientation.

I will see if I can find a photo of the cave that shows the layout.

Cheers

Found one. This photo shows the doline and the birds would perch in the bushes to the right hand side before flying down to thier nests.

Cheers

Most interesting habitat, Rick. Were there any other bird species using the cave & its surrounds that you know of?

Wow Rick, how brave would you have to be to climb down the ladder? Did You? Nothing could make me do it, not even if I dropped a thousand dollarscrying

Woko, was doing other things so didn't have so much time for birds, but saw the couple below.

Wedgetails and at least one other raptor would try to pick off a swallow now and again.

Hundreds of Welcome Swallows nesting in the walls.

Have added another shot of the doline which shows the friable walls more clearly. Shots of the cave were taken in July hence the bit of greenery still around but the birds were last xmas when it was much drier.

Araminta, We had the ladder for a July trip (see above) smiley At xmas we didn't have it so just climbed sans ladder smiley

Trying to forget how many times I have climbed that ladder smiley

Cheers

Nice, Rick. I'd like to be poking around in that nearby scrub.
