This morning I heard a distinctive high pitched whistling call, once per second with 6-10 whistles per call. I followed the call and saw a group of small birds in a tall tree mobbing a medium size bird. I thought ahah! must be a cuckoo!
I didn't have binoculars but watched for a while and got an overall impression of the bird, not a bronze cuckoo or fantail. That narrows the field somewhat so referring to my field guide and biby confirmed it as a brush cuckoo, must be the far west edge of its range here at Bathurst.
That makes 4 cuckoo species for me this year - horsfield's, pallid, fantail and brush.
